Online learning is certainly a trend. More than 4 million college and university students nationwide took at least one online course each of the past two years, according to the 2008 Survey of Distance Learning by the Instructional Technology Council and an April 2, 2009, article in U.S. News and World Report. The growth at Lamar University is reversing a troubling trend as the nation tries to meet the 21st Century challenge of seeding the knowledge economy of the future.
"The enrollment of working-age adults in college-level education or training has been declining since the early 1990s," according to Measuring Up 2008, a report by the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education. "Indicators show that access to college is fairly flat in the United States, with mostly small improvements in some states and declines in others."
The states that are improving include Texas, where Higher Ed Holdings partnerships at Lamar and the University of Texas at Arlington make it possible for more students with jobs and families to expand their education. Those who have teaching jobs can earn their master's degrees online at Lamar and UTA, often earning a valuable stipend for the advanced degree and positioning themselves for leadership opportunities.
Donna Lewis, a 14-year teaching veteran who teaches special education students at the Secondary Reassignment Center in the Irving Independent School District near Dallas, is enrolled in Lamar's online Education Administration program. After learning about the opportunities distance learning provides, she "decided it was time to go for it."
Lewis said she likely would not have been able to pursue the degree without the online option.
"I wouldn't be able to get out of my home that often," she said. "It would be too much time away from my family."
She also said that the flexibility of the program - she can view the courses when she's able, do the assignments around her schedule and join discussion groups at her leisure - was one reason she decided on the online Lamar program.
And, one Lamar professor said, that's an incentive for students to enroll.
"It's economical and psychologically friendly," said Dr. Dorothy Sisk, who holds the Conn Chair in Professional Pedagogy at Lamar and teaches the courses Cognition and Instruction, and Creative Instructional Strategies on the online platform.
"You can look at the video when you want; you can bounce your baby on your knee while you're doing it."
Ever-evolving technology also is spurring the growth in online enrollment. The expansion of bandwidth, the ability to create video in higher and higher definition, and chat room capabilities make these courses virtually identical to their classroom equivalents. For example, Sisk is updating her online Cognition and Instruction course for the 2009 Summer Semester - the Creative Instructional Strategies class will be updated for the fall term - and is using updated video technology to enhance the class.
"I found video of B.F. Skinner explaining his theories and using the Skinner Box," said Sisk, referring to the renowned 20th-century behavioral psychology scholar. "We'll have that video in a session, then have the students go into a chat room and discuss."
In fact, Sisk said she would start using the same techniques in her on-campus, face-to-face classes.
"I told my face-to-face students that we're still going to do science, but we're going to use the same format as online." Besides, students want to take courses using the latest technologies, and the Higher Ed Holdings partnership gives the professors a chance to catch up on today's methods of delivery.
"It's a new way to do everything," Lamar dean Lowery-Moore said. "It helps the professional development for the faculty. They learn new ways of instruction, learn technology, and there's been better collaboration between departments."
Access and technology are just two parts of the equation. Equally important is affordability - especially in an economic downturn, such as the one we are experiencing.
Lewis, the Lamar student who teaches in the Irving ISD, said cost was a big factor in her decision to choose the online Lamar degree, and that she would not have been able to afford a graduate degree otherwise.
The 18-month degree program costs her and her computer classmates less than half the tuition they would pay at a for profit online university like the University of Phoenix.
Lewis said the fact she is getting a quality education from a state university with recognized credentials and excellent scholars on its faculty, makes her believe she is getting more bang for the buck. Low-cost, high-quality online degree programs will be necessary to attract future generations of students, according to the Measuring Up report.
"College tuition continues to outpace family income and the price of other necessities, such as medical care, food and housing," the report stated. "The continuation of trends of the last quarter-century would place higher education beyond the reach of most Americans and would greatly exacerbate the debt burdens of those who do enroll."
Said Lowery-Moore: "What I hear a lot is that 'I wouldn't be able to get a master's degree any other way.'"
Universities know that offering online courses and degree programs that provide the same quality of education, a flexible schedule that is conducive to work and family life, and are affordable will be necessary to compete in the future.
"For-profit schools have identified types of students and programs that the traditional public and private non-profit students have paid relatively little attention to - especially older than 18-25 and students who hold full-time jobs that restrict their ability to attend courses during usual school hours," said Burton Weisbrod, co-author of "Mission and Money: Understanding the University," in a March 2 interview with Inside Higher Ed. The University of Phoenix's enrollment climbs about 16 percent per year. State universities' enrollments rise at a 2 percent rate.
Lamar and other Higher Ed Holdings partners have started responding to this new competitive reality. And Lamar professor Sisk is trying to spread the message.
"I'm on the board of a private college, Mount Union in Ohio, and I said they need to do this," she said, referring to using a service provider such as Higher Ed Holdings to move their courses online. "I have a friend at the University of Louisiana in Monroe who told me they are trying to move as many of their courses online as they can.
"I think this is the future."

pluggedTwo hundred years after the American Revolution, America is still governed by its first Constitution. We are now the longest-running constitutional republic in the history of the world. To give some perspective, France has had eight constitutions in the same 200 years. Italy has had 54 constitutions in 200 years. Why have we survived so long? It is because our founding fathers built our Constitution according to a set of ideals that are unparalleled in the history of the world.
Abraham Lincoln said, "The philosophy of the school room in one generation will be the philosophy of government in the next." If our founding fathers had a successful philosophy of government, which obviously they did, then it is very fair that we look back to the classroom to see what they taught.

Harvard: Harvard is the oldest ongoing university in the United States. Harvard produced a number of our founding fathers, including John Quincy Adams, John Hancock, John Adams, and Samuel Adams.

Harvard's original stated purpose for its students was: "To be plainly instructed and consider well that the main end of your life and studies is to know God and Jesus Christ...." One requirement of students was that "Everyone shall so exercise himself in reading the Scriptures twice a day that he shall be able to give an account of his proficiency therein."

Yale: Yale also produced many founding fathers, men like Noah Webster, William Samuel Johnson, Abraham Baldwin. One of Yale's requirements for its students read as follows: "Seeing that God is the giver of all wisdom, every student, besides his private and secret prayer, will be present morning and evening for public prayer."

Princeton: Princeton, founded in 1746, produced people like James Madison, Benjamin Rush and John Witherspoon. John Witherspoon became an ordained minister and was president of Princeton University (1768-1776) until New Jersey sent him to Congress. During those years at Princeton, the average graduating class was between 17 and 28 students per year. In the nine years that Witherspoon taught at Princeton, the school graduated one President, one Vice President, three Supreme Court Justices, ten Cabinet members, twelve Governors, twenty-one U.S. Senators, and thirty-nine U.S. Congressmen, plus many who held state offices. A full one-third of the founding fathers were trained at Princeton University.

What was the philosophy of an institution that produced so many national leaders? Princeton's founding statement was, "Cursed is all learning that is contrary to the cross of Christ." It has been many years since we have seen this kind of vision of godly leadership within society set before us.

The Foundational Documents: There are four documents which are considered the organic laws of the United States (i.e., the laws upon which all other laws are built): The Articles of Confederation, the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution and The Northwest Ordinance.

The Northwest Ordinance tells a territory specifically what it has to do in order to become a state in the United States. Article Three requires that no territory could become a state unless the schools in that territory were teaching religion and morality as well as knowledge. As a result, many state constitutions contain the following: "Forever in the schools of this state, religion and morality will be taught as well as knowledge." You may want to check your state constitution.

Look at Fisher Ames' philosophy of education: (He was the author of the First Amendment of the Constitution, which today is mis-interpreted to mean we must separate God and government.)

"Why, then, if these new books for children must be retained, as they will be, why should not the Bible regain the place it held as a school book? Its morals are pure. Its examples are captivating and noble. And the reverence for the sacred book that is thus early impressed lasts long and probably, if not impressed in infancy, never takes firm hold of the mind."

However, today under our interpretation of Fisher Ames' amendment, the Bible is not allowed to be studied in schools. We have drifted far from the days when our country was founded. As can been seen in the founding documents of our most prestigious universities, education in America was founded not on the pursuit of knowledge for the sake of knowledge, but rather on the pursuit of knowledge to glorify Christ. That happened and happens primarily through the study of the Word of God.

The freshman project of each of the founding universities in America was that the student be given a copy of the Greek New Testament and from it make a handwritten translation into English! Blessed are the schools that still teach from the Bible and keep the Bible as the central source of education.

After the war, they studied on the G. I. Bill, bought a house through the Federal Housing Program, and moved to Hawaii. Obama Jr. always did well in school. He was enrolled in the fifth grade at the esteemed Punahou Academy, graduating with honors in 1979. He was only one of three black students at the school. This is where Obama first became conscious of racism and what it meant to be an African-American. After high school, Obama studied at Occidental College in Los Angeles for two years. The University of the Internet Age - and why it's better than a traditional university

The advent of the World Wide Web has caused fundamental change to affect the way in which information is disseminated worldwide. In this paper, we shall look at the way in which this change has brought about a redefinition of the role and nature of the university, such that we may expect a seismic shift in educational provision and its take-up in the medium-term future.

Historically, dissemination of information within higher education has depended on bringing scholars and learners together in a single location, where a variety of learning techniques can be employed (such as tutorials, supervisions, research seminars etc.) The expansion of numbers within the university has caused the lecture to be increasingly employed as a keynote of academic practise, but whilst cost-effective, the mass nature of the lecture is often considered to be an inefficient means of learning when compared to more personally-directed alternatives. Few would argue with the assertion that dissemination of information is at its most effective when directed one-to-one or in small groups, for this enables levels of understanding to be easily ascertained and intellectual debate to take place. The Oxbridge tutorial model of individual or small group mentoring is rightly held up as a supremely effective means of university teaching, and given that in itself it represents a direct continuation of the learning techniques bequeathed to us by classical antiquity, it may fairly be regarded as tried and tested. As a result, we would suggest that teaching in subjects that are not substantially practical in nature (such as the clinical stages of medicine, or fine art) could take the tutorial system, coupled with small-group seminars, as a worthy learning paradigm from undergraduate study up to the doctoral level.

The coming of the Internet poses us with an interesting set of circumstances. One function of a university is to provide an environment in which ideas are shared and scholars brought together in productive interaction. We can see immediately that the World Wide Web has as one of its chief benefits the ability to bring about the virtual meeting of scholars from many different countries and backgrounds and to encourage their collaboration. Software now exists to enable virtually any kind of document, image, sound or video file to be shared directly with anyone who has an email account, or for it to be placed on a website; chatroom and bulletin board software enables real-time debate and academic interaction, often (because of its written nature and capacity for archiving as a reference source) of a much greater use than mere verbal communication. Because the participants in such dialog are judged simply on their opinions in writing, rather than necessarily from personal knowledge or any other aspect of their presentation, the use of the Web for academic interchange is a much greater spur towards equality of opportunity and concentration on the message being conveyed. The ability to draw upon sources for the support of an argument by the simple means of hyperlinking puts the power of an ever-growing academic library a click of a mouse away, rather than being lost in a maze of footnotes.

The proven need for the personalisation of educational experience at university level finds a natural home in electronic communication. Not merely can communication be personalised, but the very educational experience itself becomes increasingly one without boundaries. It is perfectly possible to encounter the products of academic scholarship in a conventional library, but few scholars nowadays choose to live cut off from electronic communication, and thus they themselves can, if they wish, participate in a global continuum of intellectual investigation in which print media are increasingly becoming a less effective means of disseminating ideas than placing them on the Web. To publish an academic work in print is to see it reach thousands at best (unless it achieves widespread popularity), whilst the Web has a reach of tens or hundreds of thousands, many of whom will offer immediate feedback and comment via their particular channels. If the aim is to further scholarship, rather than to make money for the author and publisher, web publication is surely the natural choice, not least because its costs are minimal, thus placing such a means within the reach of most if not all. Nothing in the print medium cannot be conveyed electronically, and indeed the electronic medium can enhance a printed message by use of video, animation and other techniques. Indeed, the author may well, through blogging or participating in forum discussion, choose to participate in the ongoing evolution of academic ideals through progressive reflection or debate with a far wider circle of individuals than would ever be encountered at a conference.

Teaching online means that, in an economic, time-efficient and resources-efficient manner, the benefits of the tutorial system can be realised. The skills required of faculty are more than merely operating software and marking work; there is a need to comprehend the needs of the environment of distance learning and to respond to it with understanding. It is here that the experience of faculty who have themselves studied via distance learning and who are aware of its challenges is valuable.

Examination by electronic means is sometimes said to pose difficulties because of the risk of collusion or unfair practices. This problem can be solved by requiring an online examination to take place at a proctored workstation in a specialised testing center. However, given that many mainstream institutions now advocate open-book unproctored examinations and examine knowledge principally through coursework and the completion of supervised projects, it is inevitably worth asking how pertinent testing memorisation rather than the application of knowledge actually is. Examining orally via videoconference (as can easily be achieved with something as simple as a messaging program and a webcam) will also be of help in verifying the knowledge of candidates.

It is evident that a course of higher education not requiring intensive practical activity can be delivered wholly through electronic means, and indeed there are many such degree courses available at the time of writing in a vast range of disciplines and from institutions of all types. The assessment function of the university through AP(E)L means that practical work such as art or music that is capable of being presented in a finite form may be presented for examination through video or audio recording. The only area in which electronic means fall short is in the teaching of practical skill; for example, one can learn a good deal about becoming a physician through watching videotapes and learning medical theory, but practical study under the guidance of skilled mentors is essential to develop medical practise to a professional standard. However, there are medical schools, principally in the Caribbean, that operate via distance learning in which the theory is taught intensively en bloc online, and then a practicum period follows in an approved hospital elsewhere, leading in due course to licensing as a physician in the USA or the UK. Elsewhere, for example in applied arts, it would be quite possible for the student to choose an appropriate university-approved mentor in his/her area to study under, then submitting their work and mentor's reports for assessment by the university in due course when a given stage in the learning contract had been reached and could be signed off for credit.

The move to online learning changes the nature of what a university is quite fundamentally from its commonly-encountered manifestation; although in the true sense that we define a university as a meeting-place of scholars and students with both graduate and undergraduate provision, the essential nature of the concept has remained constant. However, one might ask what use is there now for the enormously costly dinosaur mechanism of buildings, equipment and people that constitutes the modern university when a large part of its role can be largely fulfilled through the more efficient means of e-learning? Not only this, e-learning, because of its lower costs and non-geographical specificity, reaches more people, costs less, has minimal environmental impact, does not require the uprooting of home and family, is available no matter what the age of the student and above all can be combined with a career and paced flexibly to suit the individual - in credit-based systems, studies can be banked once a credit unit is completed and then used later or even transferred to another institution. The student gets a good deal more personal attention in most distance learning programs, particularly in those that use an individual mentoring system, than they would at the back of a lecture hall listening to an academic whose skills in research may very well exceed their skills in public speaking.

It may be argued that the three or four years of undergraduate life form a valuable rite of passage for the young, but with increasing numbers of young people unable to afford the costs of university easily and combining their academic studies with increasing amounts of low-grade employment, one is tempted to ask what they are gaining through physical attendance at university rather than by choosing distance learning; apart from the social aspect of their life on campus (for those who can afford to live there), which should not be discounted, the answer is not a great deal. Indeed, the online delivery of a course is by its nature capable of being considerably more compressed than on-campus study; just as a few universities compress a three-year first degree into two years and a four-year degree into three (on-campus) through shortening the holidays and using an intensively-structured year, so through online learning study can similarly become more intensive and more efficient. The key is that things move at the student's pace and according to their ability, not according to the demands of large classes or the complex scheduling of a campus university. Not only this, the advent of e-learning means that those who are ready for university-level study below the normal age need not be held back for social reasons, nor will those who choose to work after leaving school be prevented from returning to learning later or indeed combining their degree course with their career.

In practise, there will always be some kind of role for the physical university. Distance learning, requiring determination, motivation and at times being an isolated activity, does not suit everyone any more than campus-based learning does, and there are some activities, such as laboratory-based research, that have no virtual substitute. There will also continue to be those who seek the cachet of a top-ranking university for its own sake and for its professional and academic value. In reality, the biggest market for distance learning will lie with those who cannot afford campus-based study to begin with, and with those who are seeking to combine study with the demands of career and/or family. It is mid-career adults who form distance learning's most hotly contested clientele.

But we do foresee that the role of the campus will diminish substantially in years to come. At present, the academic world at once senses the potential of the Web and the threat that it poses to the establishment. American university faculty are being made to put their courses online; they are then seeing redundancies amongst their ranks and the re-hiring of staff at reduced rates to teach the virtual courses. This process is described well by an American author whose views on these issues are diametrically opposed to ours, David F. Noble, whose series "Digital Diploma Mills" describes his opposition to the move to online learning and to the commercial focus that universities are now adopting (which we would say constitutes a major reality check for them).

University of Texas Professor, Turned Arbitrator-Mediator by James O. Armstrong

On a recent Southwest Airlines flight from Dallas to Oklahoma City, I happened to meet someone who is called into the situation only if there is a dispute between a labor union and management that cannot be resolved by the parties themselves. Yes, he belongs to an elite group of men and women in the US, who are called into play only when labor arbitration is required. Arbitration in the U. S. is voluntary in the private sector and mandated in the federal sector, but the parties don't need to go through the federal government and often don't to decide on an arbitrator.

Further, at age 65, he too definitely reinvented himself from a University of Texas Graduate Business School professor to what he is today, a US labor arbitrator-mediator. After nearly 30 years at the University of Texas at Austin, I. B. "Beber" Helburn went from teaching Labor Relations, HR Management, Negotiation and Arbitration, with a part-time job of serving in his current capacity, to now practicing what he had preached full-time.

Of course, since Beber Helburn had begun his University of Texas at Austin Business School stint in January, 1968, UT Austin has steadily risen in prominence to what it has become today. Modestly, Helburn doesn't choose to take any particular credit for the school's current reputation, although in all honesty being able to take classes from such a professor would be exciting for any student. After completing his Ph.D from the University of Wisconsin Industrial Relations Institute, with a major in Industrial Relations, Dr. Helburn principally served as a university professor, but he also briefly functioned as a consultant to the Committee on Wages and Employment to the House of Representatives, State of Texas for approximately one year (which report led to the passage of the first state minimum wage law). Helburn has been listed on the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, labor arbitration panel from 1972 until the present, the labor panel of the American Arbitration Association since 1974 and the labor panel of the National Mediation Board since 1992. Helburn has been involved with Arbitration panels over the years, which have included all of the following companies: AT&T and the Communications Workers of America; Continental Airlines and the International Association of Machinists (Flight Attendants); Continental Airlines and the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA); Federal Express Corporation and ALPA; GAF Corporation and PACE International Union; Internal Revenue Service and the National Treasury Employees Union; International Paper Company and PACE plus the IBEW; Lone Star Steel and the United Steelworkers of America; Lucent Technologies and the Communications Workers of America; Major League Baseball and the Major League Players Association (Salary); Southwest Airlines and the International Association of Machinists (Reservation Agents); Southwest Airlines and TWU Local 555 (Ramp Personnel); U. S. Customs Service and the National Treasury Employees Union; U. S. Postal Service and the American Postal Workers Union, National Association of Letter Carriers and the National Rural Letter Carriers' Association; and the Veterans Administration Medical Center and the AFGE Local 1633.

On that day, he was flying to Oklahoma City and, then, driving to Elk City, Oklahoma in order to arbitrate a dispute between the US Postal Service and the American Postal Workers Union there over a staffing issue. In fact, Helburn has often arbitrated contract interpretation and discipline issues in the past at many other US Post offices in the Southwest and Southeast, as he has also done at Federal Express and Southwest Airlines too, among others.

For Beber, his typical Tuesday-Thursday weekly schedule now does not represent as much "a reinvention as more of an evolution," he said. As an exception, he commented that he was willing to take a Southwest Airlines case on Monday because, unlike many clients, Southwest Airlines and its unions are willing to set cases for Monday hearings. Further, he sometimes but not always works long hours to get disputes resolved. Please bear in mind that before his "official" retirement from UT Austin, he was certainly able to pepper his Graduate B-School lectures with many real world examples that sometimes were "stranger than fiction," he concluded.

Today, Helburn may hear two or even three cases, each in a different location, and maybe each in a different state, in the course of a week. This labor arbitrator currently experiences a 50-55% settlement rate, before the parties get to Beber. Often, he said just the threat of an imposed resolution rather than a voluntary settlement motivates the conflicting parties to reach an agreement before meeting with him.

In fact, a tactic that he often uses in these situations goes something like this. Before beginning the hearing, Helburn will tell the opposing parties that perhaps they should each "take one last shot at it" in an attempt to reach a settlement that both sides can accept. In fact, he told me that this tactic, by itself, periodically results in a settlement. When he's not dealing with arbitration matters, Helburn stays involved as the co-chair of a $10.5 million capital campaign for Congregation Beth Israel in Austin, Texas. Others have served more total times as president than he has, but he is the only one in the congregation's 128 year history to have served two separate terms (10 years apart) as president.

Helburn, who turned 65 in August, 2003 now qualifies for Medicare plus he and his wife Judith, whom he met on the first day of freshman English at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, also continue to receive medical coverage through his university group health insurance plan. Judith and Beber have two married children and four grandchildren living nearby. Judith is a Certified Sageing Leader for the Spiritual Eldering Institute. She has also been active in and on the board of Story Circle Network for Women with Stories to Tell, which has been organized as an international organization since 1998. Over the years, this stalwart adopted Texan has written books and monographs such as "Public Employer-Employee Relations in Texas: Contemporary and Emerging Developments" (1971), he has contributed chapters and proceedings toward a better understanding within his profession, he has written articles for professional journals and published teaching cases.

In conclusion, we should certainly realize that there will always be labor disputes, which will continue to provide valuable work for a seasoned professional like I. B. Beber Helburn. While not an employee, this independent contractor does perform a valuable function for our economy as a whole. Plus, he continues to be well compensated, too, for his time (including travel) and his skilled arbitration efforts.

A large amount of University students are experiencing a different kind of first-degree upon graduation.

Throughout their entire "school life" they have been told to go to high school, work hard to get good marks to get into a well-known university and graduate university with a degree and begin their career. They have been told that a degree is the key to differentiating themselves from the competition, a way to get the upper hand in a job interview and a pretty good shot at most entry-level positions in their chosen field. Their degree will be the reason they succeed at work, at home and at play.

The world of work that they have been prepared for no longer exists. It's no longer about who has graduated university. It is now about who has the right education, experience and ambition for the job. It is about who is willing to creatively solve problems and innovate.

A university degree by itself hardly holds the weight it used to. Before you go into shock, take a deep breath and recognize that a university degree isn't exactly worthless. Of course it can open doors. Of course it still shows hard work and dedication. Keep in mind however, that employers want the people who have passion for their field not just someone who listened to their guidance counselor in grade 11.

Just remember that this is a minor burn. It's easily treated with a little bit of research, passion and dedication. Don't worry it will heal relatively quickly with little or no medication.

Many University students here in the UK are this week enjoying Freshers Week or if they are a returning student are starting to make their way back to University for the start of term proper.

The questions that come up a lot in conversation for me when I am out and about talking to people are:

Will I be guaranteed to get a job after I leave University?

And

Do you I have to go to University to get the job I want or is getting experience in the workplace better than going to University?

It seems that these days schools and colleges are pushing University as the route to go to get a good income in later life and they are pushing it on all students regardless of their aspirations. Now I went to University and am proud of my University education but that doesn't mean I think that everybody should go well at least go whilst Universities are in their current state.

With tuition fees rising each year to the point now that I look at them and think that if I was thinking about going to university today I just couldn't afford it. Now I know you can put a price on a good education but when someone is paying for a service they expect the best value for their money something which I think Universities aren't doing at the moment. The prices have gone up but the amount of graduates finding well paid jobs in their specialist areas hasn't.

For me personally it took me two years after University to get a job in my specialism and if it hadn't been for me filling out hundreds of application forms and not giving up I could have quite easily ended up working in an office job all my life. Universities need to do more to connect their students with jobs at the end of their degrees.

Going to University shouldn't be about getting a grade on a piece of paper it should be about learning and experiencing the skills that you need to work in today's environment. I personally would like educational establishments to work with people and companies from the industries in which they run courses in. I want them to work in partnership to devise courses and modules that will give students real skills that are applicable to today's marketplace. I want industries and educational establishments to also work in partnership to offer work experience, work placements and jobs to graduates and under graduates in their educational establishments.

If we don't want to see a continuing large amount of potential, talent and skills go to waste we need to act now. I think the government need to look at and address this issue. The more skilled people you can get in to the workplace the better this country is going to be. The quicker you can get people in to well paying jobs the quicker they will be able to pay back their student debt and contribute to the economy instead of being a burden to it.

University students don't want to spend their lives in debt they want to contribute to this society and this economy we as a country and the government now needs to give them the chance to do so.

Universities need to stop being graded on the intellect and the grades of their students and alumni but on the number of their graduates that find skilled work in the areas in which they studied.

When I talk to people who are thinking of going to University I always advise them to speak to people who are in the industry they eventually want to work in first to see how they got in to that industry and if University is the best route. If you have decided University is for you then you need to research courses and University and find out about the modules and find out what past students on that course have gone on to do. Finally once they get to University I always advise them to get as much work experience in their chosen field as possible as with a University Education and a ton of experience you can't go wrong.

Because of my views and the views of many others on the current University system we here at Talented Young People are petitioning the government to start taking this issue seriously and to do something about it.

University Students Face 'Tight' Financial Situation by Steve Smith

With the new university term in full flow, both students and parents alike are being reminded of the financial anxieties higher education can bring.

In research carried out by Abbey, nearly a third (330,000) of students are due to start the academic year without any form of insurance to protect their possessions. Out of these respondents, an estimated 154,000 people have either not taken the time to think about getting cover or do not see their belongings as being worth enough money to warrant such a purchase. Meanwhile, 99,000 did give insurance consideration but stated that they had forgotten or ended up using the money originally intended to make such a purchase to buy something else, while some 77,000 claim to be unable to afford cover.

However, with the typical student taking 3,300 pounds worth of belongings with them to university, those without insurance may find financial pressures upon them rising if they are forced to meet the full costs of replacing items should they become a victim of theft. As a result, this could cause them to struggle in meeting demands on other areas of their finances, such as credit cards and loans. Meanwhile, the study showed that a tenth of students are taking goods valued at more than 5,000 pounds.

Prasad Shastri, head of insurance marketing for the financial services firm, stated that although the cost of higher education can put pressure on consumers' spending, which may extend to other areas of their money management such as personal loans in later life, by not getting insurance they could be left open to greater financial risk.

He said: "Even though finances can be tight while at university, with a potential total value of belongings in excess of 3,000 pounds, students should not be viewing insurance as an optional extra, but as a necessity. Over 60,000 students believe the value of their belongings does not justify buying insurance, but we find many people are shocked with how much their belongings are actually worth. For the one in five students (19 per cent) who are hoping to rely on their parents' policy for protection, we would also advise that they double-check this as they may not actually be covered."

The most popular item to be found in a student's room is a computer, with 95 per cent of students owning such an object. Books came second in the poll as they are in 92 per cent of respondents' rooms. Meanwhile, TVs and stereos account for 61 and 53 per cent respectively, with musical equipment making up 27 per cent.

In related news, it has recently been suggested that those attending university for the first time should be offered guidance on how to manage their finances effectively. Last month, a spokesperson from the National Union of Students reported that as they are now living away from home and have access to forms of borrowing such as credit cards and loans, young adults should be taught the importance of creating a budget, how best to pay off their bills and other demands on their finances. There is no doubt that a degree looks impressive on a CV, and are essential for many of the skilled jobs available in today's society, such as doctors, scientists, architects and lawyers. They enable those who have them to start from a higher rung in the career ladder, rather than down at the very bottom, but it is worth remembering that nothing is guaranteed, and sometimes students who have just finished degree courses are without what they would call 'meaningful' employment in their preferred field for months, even years, before they finally make it to where they want to be - and still with a mountain of debt on their shoulders.

Communities in Seattle: the University of Washington Area by Rob Parker

Communities around universities often enjoy a hip and trendy as well as laid back atmosphere and those surrounding the University of Washington in Seattle are no exception. Laurelhurst: This community is among the most affluential in Seattle, a fact which is immediately obvious when one sees its location. Laurelhurst is situated to the east of the University of Washington, right on the western shore of Lake Washington, affording residents incredible views of the lake as well as Mount Rainier and Union Bay. Beachfront property is in abundance both lake and bay sides, and the community's proximity to the University means that there are plenty of commercial and transportation opportunities.

University District: The University itself is part of its own district, but the residences as well as the residents of the area are markedly different from those to the east in Laurelhurst. The University District enjoys a remarkable view of Puget Sound as well as all the amenities the University has to offer, but most of the residents of the community are students renting out dwellings; the median age is 22 years old. There are representatives of all demographics who call the University District their permanent home, though, as the neighborhood includes bungalows and large single family dwellings to the north of the campus.

Roosevelt: Roosevelt is located just north of the University district, but the small distance encompasses a big change in atmosphere. Indeed, there are few amenities within the community, with only a handful of stores as well as a couple of churches and two synagogues (there is a large Jewish presence in View Ridge). View Ridge also includes View Ridge Elementary School; this school has great appeal for many parents, who relocate to the neighborhood to take advantage of the education provided.

There are communities around the University of Washington that appeal to all tastes and demographics. These communities almost form individual cities unto themselves, with their location bounded east and south by some of Seattle's most famous aquatic bodies and to the west by the I-5. Amenities are never far away, and many of the areas offer a true real sense of rural living within a city setting.
